Letters and resolutions of support from the communities along a watershed are a routine part of a grant application. They show the state that the project has local backing and that the municipalities affected by it are willing partners. Adopting the resolution commits no Borough money; it adds Tyrone’s name to the list of supporters behind the Conservancy’s application.
Pennsylvania’s Rivers Conservation Program, administered through the PA Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, helps communities and conservation groups develop plans for the streams and rivers in their watersheds. A planning grant typically funds an inventory of a waterway’s natural, recreational, and historic resources, identifies threats such as erosion, flooding, or pollution, and lays out priorities for protecting and improving the corridor over time.
Once a watershed has an approved conservation plan on file with DCNR, the projects it recommends — streambank restoration, public access points, trails, and similar improvements — become eligible for further state grant funding. In other words, the planning work the Conservancy is seeking to fund now is the step that can open the door to on-the-ground projects later.
The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy is a long-established nonprofit that works on land and water conservation across the region, frequently in partnership with local governments and watershed groups. By signing on, Tyrone joins those partners in supporting an application that, if successful, could shape how the area’s waterways are cared for in the years ahead.
