Borough Property · May 13, 2024
The Borough of Tyrone will take ownership of the former Lincoln School property after Council voted at its May 13, 2024 meeting to buy the lot from Gatesburg Road Development — the developer formerly known as S & A Homes — for $100,000. The purchase will be paid out of the Borough’s Enrichment Fund rather than from general tax revenue.
Adopted unanimously
In favor: all members present — Robert Dollar, Ken Patterson, David Snyder, Tammy Wills, Rob Poust, Sarah Hunter, Mayor Latchford. Absent: William Wiser.
The acquisition was not listed on the published agenda for the meeting. Before the vote, Mayor Latchford opened the floor for public comment on the proposed purchase; no one from the audience spoke. Council then approved the buy with every member present in favor.
Gatesburg Road Development is the current name of the firm that residents may remember as S & A Homes, the company that had held the parcel where Lincoln School once stood.
Council directed that the $100,000 come from the Borough’s Enrichment Fund. Using a dedicated fund for a one-time property acquisition keeps the cost separate from the day-to-day operating budget that pays for services like police, streets, and water, so the purchase does not draw down those line items.
The minutes record the decision to buy the land and the price; they do not set out a specific future use for the site. Any plans for the property would come before Council in the normal course of public meetings, where residents can weigh in.
On record: the vote to purchase the former Lincoln School property is part of the public meeting record at the Borough Office, 1100 Logan Avenue, (814) 684-1330. Meeting agendas and minutes are posted on the Borough’s agendas & minutes page.
