Restaurants and other eating and drinking establishments in Tyrone’s Town Center Commercial District may now include drive-thru windows, following Council’s adoption of Ordinance No. 1485 on May 12, 2025. The measure amends the Borough’s Zoning Code to add drive-thru service as a permitted feature in a district where it had not previously been addressed.

The ordinance amends Chapter 205, Zoning, specifically Article IV and Section 205-12, which governs the T-C Town Center Commercial District. The T-C district covers the Borough’s central commercial corridor, where zoning rules set out which kinds of land uses and building features are allowed. Until now, those rules did not provide for drive-thru windows; the amendment adds them as an option for eating and drinking establishments — the category that includes restaurants, cafes, and similar food-service businesses. The ordinance also formally ratifies Chapter 205, repeals any prior provisions that conflict with the change, and sets an effective date.
Because the change alters the Zoning Code, it followed the public-hearing process that Pennsylvania law requires for zoning amendments. Solicitor Stants convened a public hearing earlier in the same meeting and called for comment from residents; none was offered. Council then took up the ordinance and adopted it.
Allowing drive-thru windows does not by itself authorize any particular project. A business that wants to add one would still go through the Borough’s normal land-development and permitting review, where matters such as site layout, traffic circulation, and access are evaluated. What the ordinance does is remove the zoning barrier, giving food-service businesses in the Town Center a pathway to offer drive-thru service that the Code did not previously allow.
