In a Home Rule borough, the structure of the police force and the authority of its chief are set by the Home Rule Charter, Article XIII (Police) and the Borough Code rather than by a simple handshake. Naming a chief by ordinance puts the appointment on the public record, gives the position its full legal standing, and makes clear who holds command responsibility for the department’s officers, budget, and day-to-day operations.
The Chief of Police oversees the Borough’s sworn officers and civilian staff, sets enforcement priorities, manages scheduling and training, and answers to Council and the Mayor for how the department serves Tyrone. As the senior law-enforcement officer in the Borough, the chief is also the public face of the department — the official residents and other agencies look to on matters of public safety in town.
Residents can reach the department through the Police page on the Borough website, and the Borough Office at 1100 Logan Avenue, (814) 684-1330, can direct non-emergency questions to the right place. As always, call 911 for emergencies.
