The Borough’s police dog now has somewhere to call home. At its September 13, 2021 meeting, Council agreed to spend a $10,000 grant from Operation Our Town on a kennel and an HVAC unit for the K-9 unit, and approved the K9 Kennel Agreement that sets the terms for housing the dog.
Adopted unanimously
In favor: all members present — Robert Dollar, Sarah Jane Miller, Tammy Wills, David Snyder, Charlie Mills, William Wiser. Absent: Ken Patterson.
The grant did not cover the full cost. With the kennel and climate-control unit estimated at $10,997.74, Council also approved an additional Borough expense of $997.74 to close the gap.
A working police dog needs more than a doghouse. The kennel gives the animal a secure, dedicated space, and the HVAC unit keeps that space at a safe temperature year-round — important for a dog that has to stay healthy and ready to work in summer heat and winter cold. The Borough’s K-9 trainer recommended the unit, and the equipment will be kept at the residence of Officer Winters, the dog’s handler.
Operation Our Town is a Blair County anti-drug initiative that raises money from local businesses and residents and channels it back to police agencies for equipment, enforcement, and prevention efforts. Grants like this one let a department add capabilities — in this case, proper housing for a K-9 — without drawing the full amount from the Borough budget. Here, local fundraising covered roughly 91 percent of the project, with Tyrone taxpayers picking up the remaining $997.74.
On record: the $10,000 Operation Our Town grant, the additional $997.74 expense, and the K9 Kennel Agreement are part of the September 13, 2021 public meeting record, available at the Borough Office, 1100 Logan Avenue. Learn more about the Tyrone Police Department on the Borough’s Police page.
