Fire Protection in Tyrone

Tyrone is protected by volunteer firefighters — neighbors who train, equip, and respond at all hours without pay. Understanding how the Borough’s fire service is organized helps residents know who responds, how the Borough supports them, and how you can help.

To report a fire or any emergency, always call 9-1-1.

Two Companies, One Fire Department

Fire protection in the Borough is provided by two volunteer fire companies that together make up the Tyrone Fire Department: the Neptune Fire Company No. 1 and the Blazing Arrow Hook & Ladder Company (Chapter 20, Fire Department, § 20-1). Each is a community-based volunteer organization, and together they answer fire, rescue, and related emergency calls for the Borough.

How the Borough and the Companies Work Together

The fire companies are independent volunteer organizations, but the Borough Code formally ties them into Borough government:

  • A Fire Marshal, appointed by the Borough, oversees fire matters and serves as the local point of authority on fire safety (§ 20-2 through 20-5).
  • A Fire Committee — made up of the chief of each company — coordinates the department (§ 20-13).
  • The Borough provides an annual appropriation to help fund the companies’ operations (§ 20-24, § 20-25) — though volunteer companies also rely heavily on fundraising and donations.

What This Means for Residents

  • Open burning is restricted. Before you burn anything outdoors, know that the Borough limits open burning (Chapter 70, Open Burning). When in doubt, check with the Borough first.
  • Emergency response costs. For certain incidents, the Borough is authorized to recover emergency response costs (§ 20-30 through 20-35).
  • They need you. Volunteer companies are always recruiting firefighters and support members, and they depend on community donations and fundraisers to buy and maintain equipment. Contact either company to learn how to join or give.
