Everything that goes down a drain in Tyrone has to go somewhere — and be cleaned before it reaches the river. That is the job of the Sewer Department, which collects and treats the Borough’s wastewater. It is essential public-health infrastructure that most residents never think about, which is exactly the sign that it is working.
Last Updated: June 5, 2026
The Sewer Department operates the Borough’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, located along Route 453. The plant collects sewage from homes and businesses through the Borough’s sewer mains, treats it to state and federal standards, and returns clean water to the Little Juniata River. Proper treatment protects public health, local water quality, and the environment downstream.
Properties in the Borough connect to the public sanitary sewer system. If you are building, buying, or making a change that affects your sewer connection, coordinate with the department first. The Borough’s sewer regulations (Chapter 162, Sewers) are currently being updated by Council, so contact the department for the current connection rules, standards, and rates.
Sewer service is billed by the Borough, typically alongside your water charges. As of January 2026, you can pay your utility bill at the Main Office in the Municipal Building, or online.
If you have a sewer backup or notice a problem with a Borough main, contact the Sewer Department during business hours. For an after-hours emergency, call 9-1-1.
