The Water Department

Turn on a tap anywhere in Tyrone and you are using a system the Borough owns and runs itself. The Water Department treats and delivers drinking water to homes and businesses across the Borough — and unlike many communities, Tyrone operates its own source, plant, and distribution system. Here is how it works.

Where Your Water Comes From

The department operates out of the Water Filtration Plant, located just below the Borough reservoir along Route 453. By Administrative Code, the Water Department is responsible for “the design, construction, operation and maintenance of a water system to serve industrial, commercial and residential users” of the Borough, under a Superintendent who reports to the Borough Manager (Chapter 3, Department of Water, § 3-33).

Water Quality and Your Right to Know

The Borough is required to test the water continuously and to publish the results. Each year the department issues a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) summarizing where your water comes from and what is in it. The department also maintains a Water Service Line Inventory — part of a national effort to identify and replace lead service lines — which is available for residents to review. Both are posted on the Borough website.

Billing, Starting, and Stopping Service

Water service is billed by the Borough. As of January 2026, you can pay your utility bill at the Main Office in the Municipal Building, or online. The rates and rules for Borough water service are set by Council (the Borough’s water legislation, Chapter 196, is being updated, so contact the office for current terms and rates).

  • Transferring or changing service (for example, when you move): call the water office at (814) 684-1337.
  • A water main break or after-hours emergency: call 9-1-1.
