Out by 5:00 a.m.
Set your trash at the edge of the street by 5:00 a.m. on your pickup day. Keep cans on your property until the night before (Tyrone Code § 170-13 (opens in a new tab)).
Curbside trash and recycling for Borough residents is collected by Burgmeier’s Hauling, Inc., the Borough’s contracted hauler. Here’s your 2026 schedule and calendar, what belongs in each pickup, the twice-a-year Clean-Outs, and who to call.
Trash and recycling collection in Tyrone is a mandatory municipal service, provided through an exclusive Borough contract under the Tyrone Borough Municipal Waste Management & Recycling Ordinance (Code Chapter 170, Article II (opens in a new tab)). Burgmeier’s Hauling, Inc. holds that contract — it won the work through competitive bidding — and serves every occupied property in the Borough. The current Refuse & Recycling contract runs October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2027; when it ends, the Borough will advertise for bids again and award the contract to the winning bidder.
You are billed directly by Burgmeier’s Hauling, not the Borough. The contracted rate is $30.90 per month through September 30, 2026, then $32.45 per month beginning October 1, 2026 (set in the 2024 bid award). You can pay by mail, by phone, or online at burgmeiers.com (opens in a new tab) with your account number and the last four digits of the phone number on file. Questions about a bill go to Burgmeier’s, not the Borough.
Put your trash out by 5:00 a.m. on your scheduled pickup day, and keep containers on your property until the night before. A few rules — from Burgmeier’s and the Borough Code — keep collection running smoothly.
Set your trash at the edge of the street by 5:00 a.m. on your pickup day. Keep cans on your property until the night before (Tyrone Code § 170-13 (opens in a new tab)).
Use sealed, rust-resistant cans no larger than 30 gallons. Anything that won’t fit in a can should be boxed or bundled so one person can handle it (§ 170-13 (opens in a new tab)).
No collection on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Only the actual day is observed — if your day falls on or after the holiday, pickup shifts to the next day.
Couches, appliances, and other large items must be scheduled with Burgmeier’s call center at least 48 hours ahead, or the truck can’t take them. Any extra charge is paid when you schedule.
Burgmeier’s doesn’t credit a missed weekly pickup. If you were missed, leave your trash out and call by the morning after — they’ll arrange to collect it as soon as possible.
If Burgmeier’s closes for severe weather, leave your trash out — it’s collected within 24 hours, or as soon as conditions safely allow.
Burgmeier’s picks up recycling every week, but what they take switches week to week: co-mingled containers (bottles, jars, and cans) one week, then paper and fiber the next. Set recycling out the same way as trash — by 5:00 a.m. on your collection day. Check the 2026 calendar below to see which one goes out each week.
Bottles, jars, and cans set out together (“commingled”). Shown in orange on the calendar. For the exact items accepted, check with Burgmeier’s.

Twice a year, Burgmeier’s holds a community Clean-Out for Borough residents — your chance to set out larger household items that go beyond the normal weekly limits. Set items out by 5:00 a.m. on your collection day during the Clean-Out week.
To keep Clean-Outs manageable after years of heavy debris, Borough Council set a limit on April 14, 2025 (amending the Burgmeier’s contract): the debris you set out may not exceed what would fit in a 10-yard dumpster — about 12 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 3½ feet tall. The program is governed by the Borough’s Municipal Waste Management & Recycling Ordinance (Code Chapter 170, Article II (opens in a new tab)).
Accepted
General household items, furniture, and similar bulky waste — up to the 10-yard limit. This is the time for the larger items you can’t fit in a weekly can.
Not accepted
The same items excluded from weekly pickup: no yard waste, electronics, liquid paint/tar/oils, tires, refrigerators, freezers, or air conditioners, and no hazardous waste. See “Where everything else goes” below for how to dispose of these.
Some materials can’t go out with your trash, recycling, or Clean-Out — but each has a place. Burgmeier’s is not a compost facility and can’t accept certain items, so here’s where to take them.
Not collected by Burgmeier’s. The Borough Highway Department runs seasonal leaf and yard-waste collection — check there for the current schedule and drop-off.
TVs, computers, monitors, and other electronics aren’t accepted curbside — Pennsylvania’s Covered Device Recycling Act bans them from landfills. The Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority accepts them at its free resident drop-off at 253 Transfer Road, College Township (off Route 26), open Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. For the full list of accepted items, see the Authority’s recycling guide below, call (814) 238-7005, or visit centrecountyrecycles.org (opens in a new tab).

Larger loads of household or home-repair debris can be dropped at Burgmeier’s transfer station (BCRRF) at the Altoona facility, charged by the ton. Call (814) 943-8975, ext. 2320.
Burgmeier’s shreds confidential documents on- or off-site and recycles tires. Call Keri at (814) 943-8975, ext. 2311.
Two quick rules of thumb: questions about your own service go to Burgmeier’s; a problem with how the hauler is serving the Borough goes to the Borough.
