Adopted by Borough Council · May 12, 2025
The United States turns 250 on July 4, 2026, and Tyrone is signing on to mark the occasion. On May 12, Council adopted Resolution No. 2025-03 in support of the yearlong national celebration of that milestone, and appointed Councilmember David Snyder to represent the Borough in the planning around it.
The anniversary is formally known as the Semiquincentennial — 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. (The Borough’s minutes also refer to it as the Sesquicentennial, a term that properly describes a 150th anniversary; the celebration the resolution supports is the 250th.) Coordination is being led nationally and at the state level so that local observances connect to a broader effort rather than standing alone.
A resolution of this kind is a formal statement of the Borough’s position; it does not change any ordinance or commit specific spending. By adopting it, Council put Tyrone on record as a participating community and created a point of contact for the work ahead. Naming a single delegate — here, Councilmember Snyder — gives the planning effort one person who can carry information between the Borough and the organizers, bring opportunities back to Council, and help shape how Tyrone takes part.
The national effort is organized through America250, the body charged with coordinating the country’s 250th-anniversary commemorations. Pennsylvania — the birthplace of the Declaration and the Constitution — runs its own commission, America250 PA, which is encouraging counties and municipalities across the Commonwealth to plan local events tied to the milestone. With a delegate now appointed, Tyrone is positioned to learn what programs, grants, and event ideas come out of those efforts over the coming year.
Residents who want to follow the broader celebration, or who have ideas for how Tyrone might mark the anniversary, can reach the Borough Office at 1100 Logan Avenue or (814) 684-1330.
